Positioning sounds like a strategy paper. In truth it is a very practical question: why should a customer choose you rather than the competition? Anyone without a clear answer ends up competing on price.
Positioning is a decision
Positioning means consciously choosing what you stand for – and what you do not. That is hard, because every focus feels like giving something up. Yet it is precisely this courage to take a stance that makes a brand distinguishable.
The three questions of every positioning
- For whom? Which target group do we understand better than others?
- Which problem? Which specific need do we solve?
- Why us? What can we do that others cannot offer as credibly?
Together, the answers form the value proposition – the core that all further measures contribute to.
Credibility beats assertion
A value proposition only works if it is substantiated. “We are the quality leader” is an assertion; a well-considered presence, consistent performance and visible proof turn it into credibility. Positioning and lived reality must fit together.
A position that is claimed but not substantiated weakens the brand more than having no position at all.
From claim to value proposition
The positioning becomes a sentence that customers understand and employees can live by. It is not an advertising slogan for the drawer, but a compass for every decision – from the offering to the price to communication.
This is how a strategic decision becomes a tangible advantage: a company that is not interchangeable, but a clear choice.
