Set-up decision

In-house, agency or external marketing management — what pays off?

The choice between an in-house marketing role, an agency and an external head of marketing is rarely a pure question of cost — it is a question of control, knowledge building and response time. Even so, an honest cost comparison helps to ground the emotional debate.

An in-house role ties up personnel costs plus tools, training and absences — on an annual basis usually €70,000–110,000 fully loaded. Agencies charge by effort and retainer; external marketing leadership is typically charged as a daily or monthly rate with clearly defined responsibility.

The advantage of external leadership lies in immediate senior-level expertise without fixed-cost risk, and in scalability. The advantage of an in-house position lies in retaining knowledge and in day-to-day availability. Which mix is right depends on market dynamics, complexity and growth phase.
